Micro-Sport (Exercise)

From the Lean perspective, sport is ambivalent: On the one hand, it can be fun and improve your health, thus adding value. On the other hand, you can view it as motion for the sake of motion, which could be considered as waste.

The Lean Self answer to this conflicting views is Micro-Sport.

Micro-sport is based on the idea that a bit of activity is better than nothing. If you do it correctly, it can be even the better solution with respect to the training effectivity than hours in the gym.

Actually, this is no big deal, and I am definitely not the first to make that observation. Just look at these three examples and you will see what I mean:

  • Less waiting waste: Using the elevator is some kind of “waiting in motion”, plus the waiting for the elevator after calling it. Use the stairs instead.
  • More motion waste: Some very skinny people can best be described as constantly running around. Maybe you know such people: The second they sit at the dinner table they stand up because they have forgotten the salt. Or they are removing every tiniest spot of dirt at once. Such people burn a lot of calories without even thinking about it.
  • Morning Micro-Sport: Only five minutes in the morning, before you are even really awake. Three or for exercises, not more. Like (wall) push-ups, some knee-friendly(!) squats, and a yoga exercise for stretching. That’s all, but do it every day and change the type of exercise regularly.

Exercise #15: Find one type of micro-sport you would like to do. Start it today. Keep track of it.
